The Wheel of Life: A Whale Shark Zoetrope

Whale Shark Zoetrope

Whale Shark is a 3D stroboscopic zoetrope — a spinning kinetic sculpture that uses precisely timed strobe light to freeze motion and create the illusion of seamless, looping animation in three dimensions. The scene depicts a whale shark gliding through open water beneath a living mangrove forest, its root system reaching down through the water column into the sand below, where a fish drifts between the roots. Above the waterline, the mangrove canopy regenerates — growing in perpetual loop, a quiet meditation on cycles of life and ecological resilience. A crab picks its way along the seafloor and a bird moves through the canopy in the current version, expanding the ecosystem and deepening the sense of an entire world held in a single moment. Each element is individually sculpted and positioned with frame-precise accuracy so that under strobe, stillness becomes motion. The result is a world that only fully exists when it is spinning.
